Teasing and bullying are often the result of fear and lack of understanding. Educating classmates about fragile X may not only help dispel their fears, which hopefully will reduce the teasing, but also will give the sibling a constructive way to deal with his feelings. While parents and school personnel should be alert for signs of bullying and intervene appropriately when they are noted, telling a child to either ignore bullies or to "tattle" does not encourage a child in his or her caregiving partnership role as an advocate for the sibling.
